Move over, Cannes. Maine will be playing host to its first-ever international mustache film festival, part of its annual pageant that celebrates the bristly facial hair.

The festival set for March 30 in Portland will feature short films with storylines that involve mustaches or a main character who wears a mustache, said Nick Callanan, head of No Umbrella Media, a video production company organizing the event.

The idea for the mustache film festival, believed to be the first of its kind, grew out of an annual mustache pageant held locally to benefit arts and cancer research organizations, he said.

This year's 2012 Stache Pag will feature contestants wearing all manner of mustaches, from handlebars to horseshoes, Callanan said. There are also the walrus and Fu Manchu styles, he said.

"It's just about men expressing themselves," he said.

To be considered for the festival, films must be eight minutes or less and have a mustache theme or a main character with a mustache. Callanan said he has received submissions from as far away as Norway.

The films will be screened ahead of the pageant, which has been held annually for five years at bars, bowling alleys and elsewhere, he said.

What began as a gathering of friends mushroomed into an event that attracted some 450 people last year, he said.

The pageant includes categories for various types of mustaches, including the "Magnum, P.I.," named after the amply mustachioed television character played by actor Tom Selleck.

Popular Hollywood movies that would be considered "mustache films" might include "Smoky and the Bandit," starring Burt Reynolds with a thick mustache, "Tombstone" with Val Kilmer or films featuring action star Chuck Norris.

Proceeds from the film festival will be donated to Northeast Historic Film, a film preservation organization, and those from the pageant will be given to an arts support organization called MENSK and a cancer research fundraising group called My Stache Fights Cancer.

Drake responded to a lawsuit filed by his alleged ex-girlfriend Ericka Lee that claims she deserves co-writer credit on his song "Marvin's Room."

In a court filing, Lee states that the Toronto rapper asked her to record the song's opening monologue and hook and sent her several text messages citing her contribution and offering her a percentage of the royalties. She also states that the two had a romantic relationship that soured after the song was recorded.

A spokesperson for Drake countered that she did not ask for compensation prior to retaining a lawyer.

"This claim is entirely without merit and our client has not engaged in any wrongful conduct," a spokesperson for Drake told "The Hollywood Reporter." "Ericka Lee consented to the use of her voice in the song 'Marvin's Room' prior to its release. Lee asked only for the credit she received as 'Syren Lyric Muse,' and she did not ask for any compensation. It was only after she retained a lawyer that there was a demand for payment. Drake tried for months to resolve the matter amicably, and he now looks forward to being vindicated in court."

No, I'm not from BC, I was born and raised here in Nova Scotia, (Cole Harbour to be exact, Yes the birth place of that Crosby guy HAHA!)

I am a Canucks fan, I just wish we could watch more of the games here in the East Coast, once in a while we get them, and of course with the time difference the games come on at about 11pm.

My Husband is a Goalie in a local Adults League, so I can talk Goalie gear for DAYS!! You should start looking for the "Goalie World" Magazine for your son. It's an amazing magazine and has TONS of amazing pointers for Goalies. Now I don't even skate and I've never stood in a Goal crease to block a shot but it seems to me that being a goalie is as much about Mental toughness as it positioning and controlling rebounds.

If you move to Halifax this summer you gotta come visit us here are The BOUNCE!! We'd love to be able to welcome you and your family to the city!

5 Looks men love (according to Redbook)

#1.) Jeans and a Tank Top. It might sound boring, but they say it's just sexy ENOUGH. According to "Redbook", it makes you look low-maintenance . . . which guys LOVE. And if you put on some knee-high boots, they'll like it even more.

#2.) The Librarian Look. To "Redbook", that means a pencil skirt, blouse, heels, and glasses. But the clothes don't matter nearly as much as the glasses do. As long as you've got glasses on and your hair up, you can pull it off.

#3.) Cocktail Dresses. If you're going to something more formal, guys prefer a cocktail dress to an evening gown.

--And it's not just because it's shorter. It's what it SAYS about you: A full-length dress makes you look more sophisticated, but a cocktail dress makes you look more fun and relaxed.

#4.) Sports Jerseys. Obviously, you'll mostly attract guys who like sports . . . but that's also the MAJORITY of guys. Fitted jerseys are best, or just take a normal jersey and tie a knot in the back.

Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke died Thursday of cardiac arrest after sustaining serious injuries in a skiing accident on Jan. 10.

Burke died at the age of 29 in hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, after tearing the artery that supplies blood to the brainstem during a training run in the superpipe at a personal sponsor event at the Park City Mountain resort.

As the result of a fall after completing a jump, she suffered a ruptured vertebral artery, one of the four major arteries supplying blood to the brain. This caused her to go into cardiac arrest.

Emergency personnel responded and CPR was administered on the scene during which time she remained without a pulse or spontaneous breathing.

Burke was rushed to hospital, where she was put on life support and therapeutic hypothermia was initiated to protect her brain. On Jan. 11, she had surgery to repair the torn artery, and had been in a medically induced coma until she died on Thursday morning.

After the operation, tests showed that Burke had sustained severe irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest. This brain damage from lack of oxygen was ultimately fatal.

She died surrounded by those she loved. In accordance with her wishes, Burke's organs and tissues were donated to save the lives of others.

Burke's publicist, Nicole Wool, released a statement on Thursday afternoon.

"The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude for the international outpouring of support they have received from all the people Sarah touched," the statement said.

"Our hearts go out to Sarah's husband Rory and her entire family. It's difficult for us to imagine their pain and what they're going through. Sarah was certainly someone who lived life to the fullest and in doing so was a significant example to our community and far beyond. She will be greatly missed by all of us at the CFSA and the entire ski community," Canadian Freestyle CEO Peter Judge said in a statement also released on Thursday afternoon.

Legendary life

Burke's love of freestyle skiing started early. As a teenage moguls skier in Midland, Ont., she'd often sneak onto snowboard halfpipes for the last runs of the day.

"We did it on the last run so that if we got our tickets pulled we wouldn't be too bummed," she once told ESPN.

Burke went from an unwanted pest on the halfpipe to one of its biggest stars and advocates, winning Winter X Games gold medals and lobbying for the sport's inclusion in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Burke, who lived in Whistler, B.C., will go down as one of the legends of her sport.

Born in Barrie, Ont., and raised in Midland, Burke got her start skiing with her family when she was five years old. She took up moguls skiing and competed for Team Ontario before switching to freestyle and winning the halfpipe competition at the 2001 U.S. Open of Freeskiing.

"Sarah was a person who I think in many ways was larger than life and lived life to the fullest. She was a phenomenal representative of her sport and of young people, and of sport in general, and her participation in what she chose to do transcended that sport and went into a larger realm ..." said Judge.

Burke won four gold medals in superpipe at the Winter X Games and an additional gold in the event at the Winter X Games Europe, having swept both competitions in 2011. She was the early favourite for the event's Olympic debut.

She also won the 2005 world championships, was the first woman to land a 1080-degree spin (three full rotations) in competition and won the 2007 ESPY award as Best Female Action Sports Athlete.

Along with her accomplishments on the slopes, Burke will also be remembered for her fierce advocacy for halfpipe skiing's addition to the Olympics.

"She's been a pioneer," said Judge. "She was really one of the people that started out and led the sport in its very infancy and she rose to prominence very quickly and continued to ride that wave from the standpoint of trying to push the boundaries of the sport."

Though she was unsuccessful in getting halfpipe included at the Olympics in Vancouver, Burke continued to be a driving factor in the sport's inclusion in the 2014 Games.

"We've been fighting for years [and] it's not been an easy road," she told CBC reporter Teddy Katz on April 5, 2011, after the announcement was made.

"I woke up checking my phone a lot and keeping my fingers crossed. I knew it was looking good but you feel a little nervous. But finally when we heard that it was in, [I] was jumping for joy."

Judge spoke highly of Burke's fighting attitude towards bringing her sport into the foreground of winter sports.

"Sarah always approached sport from a 'Why not?' perspective. She carried that thought process all the way through her career," said Judge.

Burke leaves behind her husband, fellow skier Rory Bushfield.

Judge said that counselling and other resources have been made available to Burke's fellow athletes, friends and family. The Canadian Freestyle Ski Association also said that other member athletes will be made available to the media once they have received the counselling they need and feel ready to comment.

Burke's accident has raised many questions concerning the safety of athletes competing in halfpipe and superpipe events. Judge stressed that athlete safety had always been a primary concern of Burke's, from the beginning of her journey to have her sport included in the Olympics.

"Sarah was involved significantly in terms of creating safe mechanisms, not only for her to train, but for younger kids to learn," said Judge." He added that athletes are aware of the risks they are taking when they train and compete.

"There's an element of risk in any sport … there's an element of risk in walking down the street," Judge added.

A popular high school principal in Florida has been charged with two criminal offences after using hypnosis on two students who later committed suicide.

The Sarasota County state attorney charged George Kenney on Tuesday with two misdemeanour counts of “unlawful practice of hypnosis.”

Kenney, who has been on leave as principal at North Port High School since last May, is to appear in court Jan. 31.

The state attorney’s office has been investigating the 52-year-old since October, when the North Port police turned over their investigation with recommendations to prosecute.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported Thursday that Kenney has told the school district he’ll resign his job as of June 30. He has been working in district administration during the investigation.

The misdemeanour charges carry a maximum of a year in jail. The state attorney’s office declined to press more serious felony charges of unlicensed practice of health care.

Support for Kenney among the 2,300 students at the high school remained strong throughout months of investigation and tragedy.

The Colorado teen whose photo was too racy for her high school yearbook has had a second sexy photo rejected, and she's taken her fight for "freedom of expression" to the national airwaves.

Sydney Spies made headlines last week when the photo she submitted was deemed inappropriate by the Durango High School editorial board.

In the shot, the 18-year-old dancer and aspiring model is dressed in a flouncy yellow miniskirt with nothing for a top but a black scarf tied around her chest.

There was some debate as to who rejected the photo.

The yearbook's editors said it was their decision - and it had nothing to do with her revealing ensemble.

"We are an award-winning yearbook. We don't want to diminish the quality with something that can be seen as unprofessional," yearbook editor Brian Jaramillo was quoted as saying in the Durango Herald.

But Spies and her mother believe the school officials influenced the yearbook editors, who initially voted in favour of allowing the photo.

They hinted they might get the ACLU involved to defend against what they consider censorship.

"I'm a senior in high school trying to express my rights and make a difference in not only my school, but everywhere else in the world ... I want people to know that freedom of expression is essential and censoring yearbooks and people is wrong."

She appeared on the Today Show Monday and told host Matt Lauer the new photo, like the first one, is a true representation of her personality.

"I really honestly think that it describes who I am ... and I really do think it's artistic," she said. "I'm still hoping they might let me have that picture in there."

Cheating Snooping and Forgiving. Where do Canadians Stand??

Zoosk.ca, a popular social dating network, recently conducted a Cheating and Monogamy survey amongst their 14,000 single users from nine countries, and lucky enough for us, gave us the dirt.

When it comes to cheating, Canadians aren't buying. Coming in number two behind the French at 79%, a whopping 75% of Canadian singles confirm they've never cheated on a partner.

The Brits at 74%, and the Americans at 73% aren't that far behind. Italians are the most likely to cheat with 40% owning up to indiscretions while in committed, monogamous relationships.

Information is current as of the original date of publication.

For the most part, singles rank monogamy as the ideal relationship in every country, and 92% of Canadian respondents seek out this exact kind of committed relationship. Again, naughty Italians – only 40% of them want the same. Interestingly though, 11% of Canadian men who responded said if given the chance, they'd prefer an open relationship, with only 3% of Canadian women feeling the same.

A politician with more than a wandering eye could find himself in hot water with Canadian women. A whopping 60% of respondents said that if a politico cheated on his or her spouse, it would most certainly affect their vote. American women seconded that motion 57%.

But Canadian men seemed to care a little less than the 50% of American men who agreed, with only 40% confirming such philandering would change their opinion and therefore influence their vote.

In every country, women were more likely than men to see flirting as cheating, whether by text, email or in person. Close to 40% of Canadian women think flirting is cheating compared to only 25% of Canadian men. Similarly, 39% of French woman compared to 30% of French men say the same.

And it's the Germans who are the most liberal when it comes to flirting it seems, with only 22% of women and 19% of men seeing flirting as cheating.

To snoop or not to snoop, that is the question. Canadian men seem to think not, with only 12% of them likely to snoop through a partner's phone and computer compared to 38% of Italian men.

Possibly unsurprising, women in all countries were more likely to snoop than their male partners, with 27% of Canadian women willing to snoop for signs of infidelity, compared to 50% of Italian women who wouldn't hesitate. American women were the least likely to dig for dirt with only 21% willing to violate their partner's privacy in this way.

When it comes to infidelity, both men and women struggle with letting go, but in the end women are less likely to actually forgive their partners. In Canada, 23% of women would forgive their partner, compared to 33% of men. The least likely to forgive were Swedish women at 16%, whereas 31% of Swedish men could get past it.

Overall, the Germans were the most forgiving, with 25% of women and 38% of men saying they would in fact forgive their partner if they cheated.

--In a new survey by the University of the West of England, 80.7% of men, or more than four in five, admit they have body image issues. Only 75% of women in the survey said the same thing.

--And 38% of men said they'd actually give up years of their life for a perfect body. 12% would give up one year . . . 15.2% would give up two to five years . . . 5.3% would give up six to 10 years . . . and 5.3% would give up more than 10 years.

--Here are some more findings from the study . . .

--63% of men feel like their arms or chests aren't muscular enough.

--30% of men say they've heard someone refer to their "beer belly" . . . 19% have heard someone call them chubby . . . and 19% have heard someone talking about their MAN BOOBS.

--4% of guys have made themselves sick to try to control their weight. 3.4% have tried taking laxatives to lose weight.

Whoa! Jason Derulo had a Close Call!

Jason Derulo nearly paralyzed himself while performing a stunt for his Future History World Tour.

He was going for an acrobatic move but landed directly on his head and fractured a vertebra.

Derulo was rushed to Memorial West Hospital in Pembroke Pines, FL where Docs told him that he could have paralyzed himself.

The singer than had to cancel all his tour dates and promotions and has to wear a neck brace from a few months.

This Hangover Smoothie Recipe is a great way to start you're day after a night out. It's loaded with vitamin B6 to increase metabolism rate, potassium for depleted electrolytes, plus magnesium and honey to fuel your liver.

Ingredients:

- 1 Cup of Milk (vitamin D)

- 1 Whole Banana (rich in vitamin B6 and potassium)

Combine all ingredients in a blender, blend well and enjoy!

Ingredients :

- 1/4 cup of egg substitute(protein)

- 1-oz. of low-fat cheddar cheese (vitamin B12)

- 2 Pieces of Asparagus(a detox vegetable loaded with potassium)

- Tbsp of butter or 1 Tbsp of olive oil

Heat a nonstick sauté pan over medium-low heat. Add the butter and let it melt. Let the eggs cook until the bottom starts to set. With a rubber spatula, push edge of egg into the center of the pan while tilting the pan to allow uncooked egg to flow underneath the already cooked portions. Repeat until liquid egg is cooked. Gently flip cooked egg over using the spatula. Add cheese and cooked asparagus. Cook for another few seconds. Using the spatula, fold one edge of the egg across and over until the edges line up. Transfer to a plate.

To prepare the asparagus, place it in a large skillet of water, bring to a boil, and simmer uncovered until tender.

IT MAY have been slightly scorched over the years but a letter to Santa written 100 years ago, which was later discovered in a Dublin fireplace, has the magic of Christmas written all over it.

On Christmas Eve 1911, a brother and sister, who signed their names, “A or H Howard”, penned their personally designed letter to Santa with their requests for gifts and a good luck message at their home in Oaklands Terrace, Terenure (or Terurnure, as the children spelled it) in Dublin.

They placed it in the chimney of the fireplace in the front bedroom so that Santa would see it as he made his way into the Howard household in the early hours of the morning.

The letter was discovered by the house’s current occupant, John Byrne, when he was installing central heating in 1992.

Since then, he has retained it as a souvenir of another time and place but with the stamp of childhood innocence which still exists today.

The message to Santa was warm but explicit.

“I want a baby doll and a waterproof with a hood and a pair of gloves and a toffee apple and a gold penny and a silver sixpence and a long toffee.”

Ownership of the house changed over the decades, with the Byrne family moving there in 1961, but the letter survived.

“At that time, the fireplaces were made of brick with a shelf on either side,” said John Byrne who works in the building industry.

“The letter was found on one of the shelves.”

The letter remained remarkably intact given the passage of time and was only slightly burned from fires set in the house over the years.

As well as the requests for gifts from Santa the letter also contains drawings and a message of “Good Luck” to Santa from the children.

According to the 1911 census there were three children living at the address in the year in which the letter was written.

The youngest of them, Hannah, who was 10 at the time, and Fred (presumably short for Alfred) who was seven, fit in with the initials on the letter.

A third child, a 13-year-old called Lily, is also listed.

The Howard family were all born in England, including parents Fred Hamer Howard, an “under manager” in a plumber merchants, and his wife Mary Elizabeth. They listed their religion as Church of Ireland.

First Candle of the Menorah to be Lit in Grand Parade to Celebrate Hanukkah

Mayor Peter Kelly and Regional Councillors invite HRM residents to the lighting of the Hanukkah Menorah this Tuesday (Dec. 20) at 6 pm in Grand Parade Square.

Hanukkah is an eight-day Festival of Lights beginning on the Hebrew calendar date of 25 Kislev which this year falls on December 20th through to the 28th.

The giant Menorah has been erected by the Chabad Lubavitch Organization to promote awareness and appreciation of the Hanukkah Festival and its message - the triumph of freedom over oppression, spirit over matter, light over darkness. A candle will be lit each additional night during Hanukkah. The ninth candle in the Menorah - Shamash - is the candle to light all other candles.

HRP launches Online Crime Prevention Video Series

Halifax Regional Police is trying new ways to educate the public on what they can do to prevent becoming victims of crime. Building on the momentum of the in-person Crime Prevention Series meetings held in the fall, HRP has launched an Online Crime Prevention Video Series which can be found on YouTube at www.youtube.com/hfxregpolice.

In the first video of the series, Community Response Officer George Farmer shares simple tips that will help homeowners and renters protect their homes from thieves. The series will cover other topics including theft from vehicles, internet safety and cyber bullying, seniors’ and personal safety, and fraud and identity theft.

HRP will also take to their Twitter and Facebook pages from December 13 - 23 to report every residential break and enter that takes place in HRP jurisdiction during the previous 24 hours. The intent is to educate the public on the frequency of this crime and the importance of taking easy steps to protect your home from thieves.

“Break and enters have been an on-going issue in HRM and we want to do everything we can to prevent them, especially during the holiday season,” explains Chief Frank Beazley. “Our hope with this initiative is to show citizens just how frequently this crime is occurring, offer tips on how they can decrease their chances of having their home broken into, and ultimately change behaviours.”

This isn’t the first time HRP has turned to social media to fight crime. A similar campaign, focused on theft from vehicles, was launched in August. “Though we didn’t see a dramatic reduction in the number of thefts from vehicles, we’ve received feedback from citizens telling us they have changed their behaviour because of the campaign,” says Chief Beazley. HRP is hopeful that the video series and B&E social media campaign will do the same.

The Word Hero....

....is tossed around a lot these days. Sometimes, if someone brings me a coffee at 3pm on a Monday afternoon, I tell them they are my hero. It's not so much that they have saved my life, it's become a way to express my gratitude. War Heroes, sports heroes (Crosby's Golden Goal come to mind here) all fall into different categories.

What I want, and what I'm trying to say, is that this time of year, we all of the opportunity to be heroes to someone. 101.3 The BOUNCE is helping with this years Empire Theaters Annual Toy Drive for the Salvation Army. This year the need for Toys is huge. And we are into days 2 of our Live Broadcasts from Empire Theaters, and already, we are floored by your generosity. We say all year round that BOUNCE Listeners are the Best Looking, Smartest, and most generous listeners in HRM. And we support things Like the Empire Theaters Annual Toy Drive for the Salvation Army, you come through bigger and better then could hope for.

When people in our communities fall on hard times, as we all do from time to time, it's important to give them a hand, to show then that falling on hard times isn't a permanent situation, that there is an entire community out the that's behind them and pulling for them. It's a chance to open our hearts to complete strangers and show that in this world of cynicism there is still genuine caring, and concern. It's a chance for our community leaders to stop with the bickering over Oval names or concert scandals, or whatever else the buzz topic of the day is, and for them to realize that as a community HRM is more than finger pointing, it's more than any of us realize. Lady GaGa's directorial debut is a 14 minute long look into GaGa's mind. The night Island Def Jam dropped her. The struggles that went through her mind. The ambitions.

But she wants to make sure her little monsters know exactly what was going through her head when she created this video. Marry the Night is her interpretation of that day.

And she explains it like this:

It is my personal way of seeing things. If you give up after something like that, you were never destined to be an entertainer.

It was one of the worst days of my life and it happened quite quickly, but in my mind, when I think back on that period of my life, it all happened very slow.

I was naked in real life when it happened. That's probably the most honest moment in that video of everything I've ever done. My directorial decision was for them to just f–king roll the cameras, because I couldn't go in and out of the moment.

In order to be great writing music, you have to acknowledge what is wrong with your work, or what is dishonest about it. What have I not been really great at?

I don't know, I don't have an answer to that question. I love the obstacles. To marry your obstacles mean I, the artist, wholeheartedly accept everything you throw at me, I am destined to struggle, I am destined to write music about the struggle, and I accept it willingly.

Well it definitely takes a lot of guts to admit that in this industry!

Prince + Halifax = More than I ever expected!

To The People who shared the air with me at The Halifax Metro Center on November 30 2011, I wanted to say Thank-You.

Thank you because The Prince Concert is a Concert I have been waiting for, for as long as I can remember. Thank You to everyone around me in Section 23, who were considerate of those around you, thank you, for singing every word of every song with me. Thank you for being amazing.

I’ve been to a few shows, and I’ve had some amazingly terrible experiences, not with the artist performing, but with individuals who pushed, and shoved. Who paid no care to the people they were sharing the experience with.

I believe this speaks VOLUMES about the type of people Prince attracts to him. Positivity, and desire to put the flippin’ Smartphone down, and connect with living breathing people who are beside you, in front of, or behind you.

What I experienced last night was beyond anything I could have hoped for, and it was everything I’ve ever imagined it could be, and the people in the crowd as well and Prince and his Band were all collectively responsible for that. THANK YOU!

I’ve been a lifelong fan of Prince, which I can assure you raised eyebrows at 11 years old, but I LOVED him then, and I will always view Prince as my Number One All Time Artist. I’m not going to try to convince anyone I’m his “Biggest Fan” Because in reality of it all, I doubt that I am. I have his albums, I own his movies, I read or watch or listen to any interview Prince does or has done that I can find, I know what First Avenue and 7th Street Entry is, and I understand the importance of the Minneapolis Music scene and the influence it has had on him, and the influence he has had on it.

I understand why last night, when security caught people taking photos they made them delete the photos. I get Prince. I know how protective he is of his image and intellectual property. He is his music, his music is him.

To Prince, today I would say Thank You, for being more than I Hoped. Thank You for making the music that you make, and Thank you for putting everything that you are into your music, last night at the Halifax Metro Center, with you and your band I screamed, I cried, I danced, then I was in awe, and cried again, then danced then screamed then GLEEFULLY sang along, and cried some more.

Prince, is more than a person, more than a performer, and more than an artist. He is ideal, and I’m glad that for a couple hours last night, Prince and his Band, brought his show to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and I’m glad I was lucky enough to be there and be part of it.

Cyberbullying Task Force - Update

Support for the Cyberbullying Task Force has been so positive that it will take longer than expected to process all the feedback and recommendations from Nova Scotians.

The task force will have until the end of February to deliver its report and recommendations to help with the problem of cyberbullying.

"I have been very impressed with the high level of public interest and the willingness of many parts of our community to partner in finding better responses to the growing problems of bullying and cyberbullying," said Wayne MacKay, Cyberbullying Task Force chair. "Forging these partnerships takes time but is well worth the effort."

Along with presentations from experts in the fields of bullying and cyberbullying, the task force received more than 5,000 responses to the online survey and conducted 35 focus groups involving about 1,000 students from across the province. The chair also had several speaking engagements on the topic, including meetings with the public.

"Since the task force began, the response from Nova Scotians has been tremendous," said Education Minister Ramona Jennex. "Our partners recognized from the onset that the original timeline was ambitious, and I acknowledge the need for more time to process the enormous amount of input, especially from students."

To get a better picture of the scope and prevalence of the problem, and to find out what students think are possible solutions, the task force increased the number of student focus groups from eight to 35.

The Cyberbullying Task Force and Working Group are analyzing the information collected from the expert presentations, focus groups and online survey for use in the overall report.

Over-Cooked Meal Lands Man in Hot Water

A man faces charges after an unusual break and enter this morning in Halifax.

At 5:08 a.m., officers responded to a break and enter in the 100 block of Main Avenue. The resident reported that when he woke up and he saw flames near his garage. When he went to investigate further, he discovered the flames were actually coming from his barbeque as a result of food burning. Additional investigation determined that the food in question was ribs that had been stolen from a freezer in the garage. A K9 unit attended and was able to locate a man hiding in a nearby yard. He was arrested without incident and found to be in possession of other items that were determined to be stolen. The victim was able to extinguish the fire, however, the meal was a total loss.

An 18-year-old man faces charges of break and enter, theft, possession of stolen property, breaching a weapons’ prohibition, carrying a concealed weapon and trespass by night. He is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court today.

Teens around the U.S are reportedly getting high by listening to MP3s that allegedly induce a state of ecstasy.

Digital drugs, also referred to as sonic drugs or “I-dosing,” are sound files that are downloadable, legal and popular with teenagers, theGrio reports.

Videos posted on YouTube show a teenager shaking violently, a teen-aged girl who appears to be disorientated leaping up in fear, and a young boy appearing to be in extreme distress.

Some songs have become popular on YouTube, receiving nearly half a million hits on YouTube. While many reactions to this trend have been skeptical, schools in Colorado have warned parents of the craze back in 2010.

While there have been no studies on “I-dosing,” experts say that they can be a gateway to real drugs.

I live on a street that has no sidewalks, and I pay a Sidewalk clearing tax, so I read this press release, and it turns out that people who have sidewalks, in some places, are responsible for clearing them, or they are fined.....totes confused.....What do my sidewalk clearing taxes pay for?

The return of cold weather means snow shovelling season is upon us. At this time, HRM asks for cooperation from property owners in the former City of Halifax to make the winter season less challenging for individuals who depend upon clear sidewalks for safe transit.

In the former City of Halifax, the Municipality is responsible for sidewalk clearing service to District 10 Clayton Park West, District 15 Fairview-Clayton Park, and District 16 Rockingham-Wentworth. HRM will also clear all sidewalks on major arterial highways and bus stops.

In areas where the Municipality does not provide sidewalk snow and ice clearing - primarily Peninsular Halifax, Armdale, Purcell=s Cove and Spryfield - HRM By-Law S-300 requires property owners to clear any sidewalks abutting their property within 12 hours after the end of any snow fall, or 6 hours after daylight if the snow has stopped falling during the night. To enable safe pedestrian transit, sidewalks must be cleared to the bare pavement for a minimum width of 3 feet.

Property owners in violation of Part One of By-Law S-300 will receive a notice advising their sidewalk must be cleared within 24 hours. Failure to comply with the notice will result in the HRM removing the snow and ice at the owner’s expense and may result in the property owner receiving a summary offence ticket.

Call the HRM Corporate Call Centre at 490-4000 to register a complaint regarding a violation of By-Law S-300 or to find out who is responsible for clearing sidewalks in your area.

HRM Partners in Policing would like to advise motorists to adjust their driving habits in light of today’s weather.

Since 8:30 a.m. police have received at least 35 reports of vehicle crashes or collisions across HRM. Treacherous driving conditions have resulted in reports of vehicles being unable to negotiate steep or sharply curving roads. Police have shut down a number of roads either to investigate a crash or due to road conditions. The closures are sporadic and temporary, and motorists may be diverted along alternate routes.

HRM Partners in Policing are reminding motorists to adjust their driving habits and be mindful of the change of road conditions throughout the day and overnight. In order to safely arrive at your destination, slow down, allow extra time for your commute and ensure you leave extra stopping distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. Motorists are also reminded to avoid going down steep roads until they are properly salted. Pedestrians are reminded to make eye contact with drivers and wait until the vehicle comes to a complete stop before attempting to cross the road.
