With the upcoming Natal Day weekend, HRM Partners in Policing would like to remind motorists about events which may impact traffic and also encourage safe driving.
On Monday August 1, the 116th Annual Natal Day Parade is scheduled to commence at 10 a.m. It will follow the same route as in years past, starting on Novalea Drive, traveling down Gottingen Street, crossing the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge, along Wyse Road, down Alderney Drive onto Prince Albert Road and finishing at Sullivan's Pond. The route will be closed as the parade passes through and motorists should expect delays.
The 29th Annual Bridge Walk also takes place on Monday from 2 - 4 p.m.
The MacDonald Bridge will be closed from 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. for the parade and bridge walk.
With all the activities planned, police expect heavier then usual traffic on our roads this weekend. Motorists are advised to allow extra time to reach their destination. Pedestrians are also reminded to use crosswalks when crossing the street and to work in partnership with drivers to ensure that HRM streets are safe for everyone.
Visit http://www.natalday.org/ for more information on Natal Day Events and www.hdbc.ca/news.asp for information on bridge closures.
HRM Partners in Policing would like to wish everyone a fun and safe Natal Day.

HRM Drunk Driving Stats for June
In June, citizens and HRM Partners in Policing joined forces to continue the fight against drinking and driving.
Throughout June, police charged 60 people - 43 men and 17 women, ranging in age from 19 to 56 - with impaired driving. Of these incidents, 30 were identified by police during their patrols, nine were identified after a collision had occurred and 21 were called-in by concerned citizens. Officers issued an additional 20 seven-day suspensions to people having a blood alcohol level between 50-80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood (mg%).
Of the 60 cases where people were charged, 60 percent of the people had a blood alcohol concentration of more than twice the legal limit of 80 mg%. Seven people were charged with refusing to comply with a breath test demand and one person was charged with failing to comply with a demand to submit to a drug evaluation. One person was charged with being impaired by prescription drugs.
Driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs puts everyone in danger. In December 2009, MADD Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia launched Campaign 911 which encourages people to call police with information on suspected impaired drivers. HRM Partners in Policing continue to be encouraged by the number of citizens helping to play a role in community safety. If you have information on a drunk driver, please call 911.
